Fossils are the remains or traces of ancient life that have been preserved by natural processes, from spectacular skeletons to tiny sea shells.

Ammonite is a marine animal and an extinct subclass of cephalopods, whose present-day descendants include the octopus, squid & nautilus.  Ammonites lived from approximately 400 to 65 million years ago (late cretaceous).   They lived during the periods of Earth history known as the Jurassic & Cretacious.    Commonly found as fossils, formed when the remains or traces of the animal became buried sediment that later solidified into rock.
